In A Court of Frost and Starlight, the story follows Feyre Archeron, Rhysand, and their family as they navigate the aftermath of the war and work toward rebuilding a more peaceful future. The plot primarily focuses on the Winter Solstice holiday and the fae celebrations surrounding it. After their victory over the King of Hybern, who sought to dominate the world and re-enslave humans, Rhys and Feyre dedicate themselves to rebuilding their home and strengthening relationships with humans. They also seek to form lasting alliances between the fae courts to prevent further conflict and protect the human realms. However, despite their progress, both Rhys and Feyre are struggling to process the trauma and emotions of the war, finding solace in each other but still carrying the weight of unresolved feelings.
The story begins with Feyre reflecting on the significance of the upcoming Winter Solstice and how she and Rhys have used work as a distraction from their painful memories. As the leader of the Night Court, Rhys is overwhelmed with efforts to maintain peace, and when he learns of unrest among the Illyrians, his winged warriors, he hides this from Cassian, who has his own emotional baggage from the war. Meanwhile, Feyre encounters Ressina, a fae artist who defended the artists’ quarter during Hybern’s attack, and she is invited to join an artists’ group. Although Feyre declines, she is inspired by Ressina’s invitation and, later, by the weaver she meets while shopping for Winter Solstice gifts. The weaver’s art, created out of sorrow, inspires Feyre to express herself through painting again, leading her to confront the painful memories of herself from the Ouroboros mirror, which showed her true reflection during the war.
Rhys and Feyre also attend a tense meeting with Mor’s estranged family in the Court of Nightmares, where they encounter Eris, the son of the High Lord of the Autumn Court, and the man who once betrayed Mor. This confrontation stirs up painful memories for Mor, but it leads to a moment of reconciliation with Rhys as they address the difficult decisions he has made for the sake of peace. Feyre also continues her efforts to help her sisters heal, though Nesta remains distant, unwilling to join their efforts until Feyre offers financial incentive. Mor later invites Feyre to join her on a walk to discuss the tension over Mor’s father, Keir, who has been allowed to visit Velaris in exchange for military aid. Mor and Rhys resolve their differences, and Rhys asks Mor to take on the important role of ambassador between the courts to expedite the peace process.
Feyre and Elain, the two youngest Archeron sisters, spend time shopping for Winter Solstice gifts, during which Feyre learns more about the importance of the tradition and its significance. Afterward, Feyre’s thoughts turn to Nesta, hoping that she will attend the Solstice gathering, and later that night, the family celebrates together. Feyre gives Rhys a gift of her readiness to have children, signaling a significant step forward in their relationship, while Rhys gives her a gift of one of the estates destroyed in the war, which she can rebuild as a home for their extended family. During this time, Feyre reflects on her own journey of healing and the growth she has experienced.
In the midst of the Solstice celebrations, Feyre and Rhys revisit Tamlin, Feyre’s former lover, who is now broken and abandoned by his people. Rhys offers Tamlin a chance at redemption, but the encounter is tense and emotionally fraught. Tamlin is left to deal with the consequences of his past actions while Feyre continues to grapple with her complex feelings toward him. Lucien, Tamlin’s former friend and Elain’s estranged partner, also returns to the family gathering, where he and Feyre have a tense conversation about their shared history. Elain, still avoiding Lucien, remains distant, though the conversation reveals his own feelings of isolation.
As the Winter Solstice comes to a close, Feyre reflects on her growth and the sense of purpose she feels. She decides to purchase the abandoned art studio she had visited earlier, with the intention of turning it into a space for children to heal through art. With the support of her family, Feyre and Ressina open a studio offering art classes for children, allowing Feyre to channel her own healing into helping others. Feyre, feeling fulfilled for the first time in a long while, tells Rhys that she is finally happy, knowing that while the road to peace and healing is ongoing, she is moving forward with a sense of purpose and hope.
