In the post-apocalyptic future, the North American nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts, each ruled by the Capitol—a wealthy and technologically advanced city nestled in the Rocky Mountains. Every year, as punishment for a past rebellion, the Capitol forces each of the 12 districts to send two children, called tributes, to participate in a televised battle to the death known as the Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, is from District 12, the poorest of the districts. After her victory in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss returns to her home with her co-victor, Peeta Mellark, and tries to move past the traumatic events of the arena. However, she is haunted by nightmares and knows that things will never be the same.
President Snow, the oppressive ruler of Panem, visits Katniss and makes it clear that the unrest sweeping through the districts is a direct result of her defiance during the Games. Rather than killing Peeta in the arena, Katniss and Peeta had threatened to consume poisonous berries and die together, forcing the Capitol to declare them joint victors in order to avoid a scandal. Snow warns Katniss that she must convince him and the nation that she is deeply in love with Peeta, as her actions must be portrayed as a romantic gesture rather than a politically charged rebellion. During their tour of the districts, Katniss and Peeta notice signs of rebellion beginning to surface, particularly in District 11, where a man is executed for giving a salute to Katniss. Disturbed by this, Katniss confides in Peeta about the threat Snow made. To further the Capitol’s narrative, Katniss and Peeta get engaged in a televised interview. Despite their efforts, President Snow remains unsatisfied, and as Katniss and Peeta return home, they learn that an uprising has erupted in District 8. In an attempt to protect their loved ones from the Capitol’s wrath, Katniss urges her friend Gale to leave with her and go into hiding. However, Gale chooses to stay, determined to join the rebellion if it comes to that. When Gale is publicly whipped by the Capitol’s Peacekeepers for hunting illegally, Katniss realizes that she cannot simply run away and must instead stay and fight.
Soon after, President Snow announces the Quarter Quell, a special Hunger Games twist that happens every 25 years. For the 75th Hunger Games, the Capitol decrees that the tributes will be chosen from the surviving victors of past Games. As the only living female tribute from District 12, Katniss is forced to return to the arena. When her mentor Haymitch Abernathy is selected as the male tribute, Peeta volunteers to take his place, determined to protect Katniss once again.
Back in the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta begin intense training with the other victors, including Finnick Odair, Johanna Mason, Beetee, and Wiress. In a dramatic televised interview before the Games begin, Katniss wears a white wedding gown that is transformed into a black feathered dress, symbolizing the mockingjay, the emblem of the growing rebellion against the Capitol. Once in the arena, Katniss and the other tributes form an uneasy alliance to navigate the deadly traps set by the Capitol. They realize that the arena is structured like a clock, with deadly lightning strikes occurring at specific times each day. The group devises a plan to electrocute the other tributes by running a wire from a tree hit by lightning to the arena’s water supply. However, after suspecting that Johanna and Finnick may have turned against them, Katniss alters the plan. She ties the wire to one of her arrows and shoots it at the roof of the arena, triggering an explosion that destroys the arena’s force field.
The blast knocks Katniss unconscious, and when she wakes, she discovers that she has been rescued by rebel forces. Haymitch and Plutarch Heavensbee, the Games’ architect, reveal that the destruction of the arena was part of a larger strategy to extract Katniss from the Games. She is to become the face of the rebellion, a symbol of hope for the oppressed districts. While Katniss and Finnick are safely rescued, Peeta is left behind in the Capitol. Furious and heartbroken, Katniss is sedated, unable to process the devastating news.
The story culminates in a heart-wrenching twist. Gale informs Katniss that in retaliation for her role in the rebellion, the Capitol has destroyed District 12. Though he managed to rescue Katniss’s mother and sister, Prim, the rest of the district has been obliterated. This revelation leaves Katniss torn between guilt, anger, and an overwhelming sense of responsibility, setting the stage for the next chapter in her journey and the looming rebellion that is sure to come.
