Key Points

• Paedyn Gray is a powerless human in a world (Kingdom of Thalassar, ruled by a the powerful Azer family) where magic determines status. She's been hiding her lack of power to survive in a society that sees the powerless as inferior.

• Paedyn and Adena work together to live on the streets. Paedyn by thieving, Adena by being a seamstress. One day Paedyn decides to steal from a rich looking man. Turns out, it was Prince Kai Azer. Their display turns the eyes of the town on Paedyn.

• A kingdom-wide tournament is announced, where the strongest magical beings compete for power and glory. Paedyn is chosen to go in (Kai is also going in), making her panic and she does not really have a power. Paedyn uses her wits and agility to pass as a powered individual.

• Throughout the tournament, Paedyn faces various magical challenges. She continues to use her intelligence to overcome them, but the pressure of maintaining her secret grows. She also gets to know Kai and Kitt. She slowly falls for Kai (and Kai her), but Kitt is equally entralled by her. However, Paedyn doesn't like looking at Kitt, because he reminds her of his father, the King, who is respoinsible for killing her father. Pae realizes that she is a great position to one day kill the king.

• We get to learn about Kai, who has been trained to be a killer. He is supposed to the King's enforcer, to do the King's bidding. At the moment, he usually is sent into Paedyns town to kill children who do not have powers. The King believes that is what he is doing, however Kai is actually getting the children to safety.

• Adena is able to come into the castle and be the personal seamstress to Pae. Meanwhile, Pae is working with rebels.

• Before the final trial, Kai and Pae admit their feelings of each other. And then they go into the final trial. In a twist, King Azer brings out Adena, where Pae is forced to watch her die. The trials end, Pae goes to kill the king. He somewhat expects it; there is a fight, he tortures Pae and brands her, but she ends up stabbing him.

• Both princes find out about what Pae has done, Kitt (now King), orders Kai the Enforcer to go and find Pae, and to bring her back to him.
